In October 2024, BiOrigin Specialty Products’ (BSP) New Product Development team attended the Specialty Papers US (SPUS) conference in Milwaukee, WI. This annual event brings together industry leaders to discuss innovations, challenges, and trends shaping the specialty paper markets.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation

SPUS is a gathering of experts in the specialty paper industry to exchange ideas and showcase new developments.

Dave Barr, BSP’s Director of New Product Development, represented the company on the Papermakers Panel, sharing his insights as an experienced papermaker. “Last year the focus was on plastic replacement in packaging,” Barr noted. “This year, while plastic replacement remained a key topic, there was a significant shift toward exploring alternative fibers. It was interesting to hear those discussions.”

Exploring Sustainable Solutions

The conference highlighted alternative fibers, such as hemp and bamboo, as well as advancements in Oil and Grease Resistance (OGR) paper. Many companies have set ambitious sustainability goals for 2025–2030, aiming to achieve these objectives through innovative solutions like OGR technology and alternative fiber integration.

“It was a good learning experience to hear from other companies about what they’re doing,” shared Yustus Cyizere, Project Manager at BSP. “We learned a lot about where the market is moving and what brand owners are looking for in terms of sustainable products. It validated our current product development strategy and provided valuable insights.”

Insights from the Papermakers Panel

During the Papermakers Panel, Barr and fellow industry leaders discussed market trends and shared experiences overcoming recent challenges.

“Everyone in this industry has faced hurdles,” Barr explained. “The panel discussions highlighted common roadblocks and the innovative ways companies have navigated them. It was encouraging to see how we’re all driving progress together.”

The Value of Industry Events

Conferences like SPUS are vital for fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the specialty paper sector. They provide opportunities to connect with peers, learn from their experiences, and showcase our own innovations.

“Events like this help us get our name out there and highlight what we’re capable of as a company,” said Barr. “We’re excited to continue sharing our advancements and participating in discussions that shape the future of our industry.”

As we look ahead, BSP remains committed to innovation and sustainability in the specialty paper markets. Keep an eye out for more BSP appearances at future industry events!
