In 2024, BiOrigin Specialty Products (BSP) proudly contributed to the development of an ADA-compliant playground and skatepark in Ladysmith, WI. ADA compliance refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design, ensuring spaces are accessible for individuals with disabilities.
“Children and adults with disabilities often face barriers to enjoying regular playground equipment,” shared Bob Grotzinger, Safety Technician at BSP and Mayor of Ladysmith. “This new playground is specifically designed to provide opportunities for meaningful play that everyone can enjoy.”
Transforming a Community Space
Ladysmith, located in Northwest Wisconsin, is home to one of BSP’s six paper mills, specializing in specialty tissue and towel products. In recent years, the local school district closed one of its campuses, leaving the property’s fields open for redevelopment. The city recognized an opportunity to repurpose this space for an inclusive playground and skatepark.
“The city had been discussing an inclusive playground for some time, and this site was the perfect location,” explained Grotzinger.
With funding from grants and donations from local businesses, individuals, and banks, the project took shape quickly. BSP’s donation was part of a larger community effort to bring this vision to life.
Inclusive Features and Community Input
The new playground and skatepark include ADA-compliant features to ensure accessibility for all. The project also features a pavilion complex with shade, tables, and accessible restrooms, creating a space where families can enjoy extended visits.
“The pavilion will allow families to make a day out of their visit,” Grotzinger said. “Whether it’s playing, picnicking, or relaxing, there’s something for everyone.”
Opening and Community Impact
By late 2024, the playground and skatepark were completed and opened to the public. The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The kids couldn’t wait to use it,” Grotzinger shared. “They were on it before the sidewalks were even installed! We had to limit usage to daylight hours until lighting was added.”
A Commitment to Community Investment
The ADA-compliant playground and skatepark are more than just facilities; they’re a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of inclusive spaces. BSP is proud to have played a role in this transformative project and looks forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future.
