What started as a simple sponsorship turned into a meaningful contribution when BiOrigin Specialty Products’ (BSP) Natural Dam, NY Paper Mill donated funds to purchase a physical rehab bike for the local Gouverneur Hospital. This act of generosity highlights BSP’s commitment to giving back to the communities where we live and work.

From Sponsorship to Generosity

Over the summer, Lisa Knight, Purchasing Specialist, received a postcard from the Gouverneur Hospital Auxiliary (GHA) promoting their annual golf tournament. The invitation asked local businesses to sponsor aspects of the event, such as a hole or food. However, the Natural Dam team saw an opportunity to make a bigger impact.

“I saw that the hospital was raising money for a physical therapy bike, so I thought, why not go ahead and purchase that for them?” said Marco L’Italien, Vice President of Operations.

This decision allowed the hospital to acquire the much-needed SciFit Pro Bike for their physical therapy department—a crucial tool for patient rehabilitation.

Supporting Local Healthcare

Each year, the GHA identifies key equipment needs for the Gouverneur Hospital. According to the Gouverneur Tribune Press, this year’s fundraising efforts aim to secure not only the rehab bike but also a Glidescope, Ultrasound, Stretchers, and an Echo Table for Radiology.

The GHA has a long history of supporting the hospital. Founded in 1929, the organization raises funds through events and local business donations to help with equipment purchases, building renovations, and patient aid. They also provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in medical fields.

“We used to donate locally every year, but somewhere along the way, those donations stopped,” noted Terri McDonald, Operations Coordinator. “We’re really excited to start donating to these causes again.”

Community Commitment Beyond Healthcare

Natural Dam’s generosity doesn’t stop at healthcare. The mill also participated in Gouverneur’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, an event that raises funds for the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Foundation. The mill created bright pink t-shirts for employees to wear during the walk, proudly representing BSP and showing solidarity with the community.

“All of the local businesses and schools do something for this walk,” said Emily Whitton, Operations Coordinator. “We wanted our team to have something to wear so they can participate and show their support.”

Investing in Our Communities

At BSP, we believe in the importance of supporting the communities that support us. Through acts of generosity like the donation to Gouverneur Hospital and participation in community events, we strive to make a positive impact. Together, we’re building stronger, healthier communities.
